planning to convert 90000 KMS National Highways into Green Corridors

The government’s strategy is to create a crew of 1,000 contractors to complete this motivated task said by the Nitin Gadkari, Road Transport & Highway Minister.

Gadkari said in an event on Waste Management that now they have decided to spend the 1% cost of the road construction in planting the trees and also on some other things. To fulfill this purpose, they are going to create a crew of 1,000 contractors in our country. These contractors will have their own plant nurseries and they will grow the new trees and will make a green area on the National Highways.

He also said that if the cost of road construction will come around Rs 1 lakh crore then 1,000 crores would spend in tree plantation.

He said that the tree plantation would depend upon the suitability of the soil because the particular areas have different soil composition. Except this soil, there are some other aspects also like climate etc.

For example, In Konkan, a state of Maharashtra is famous for its Alphonso Mango trees. In Chhattisgarh, they can grow tamarind trees. Somewhere they can also plant the flowering trees like Roses in between the length of the road.

Except planting trees, the government will stand against the felling of trees and for transplantations; they would import a technology from Canada.

He said that this new green policy will cover the creation of employment and it contributes into the economic development of the country.

The road network of India is the second largest in the world i.e. 33 lakhs Km and it consists of 92,851 of the National Highways. It constitutes to the road network only 1.7% but carry 40% of the total road traffic.
