Reliance Communications Temporarily Bans Free Basics on Facebook
According to The Times of India reports, the TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) appeals India-based mobile operator Reliance Communications to put Free Basics 0-Rating plan on Facebook on hold temporarily. When asked by TOI, a senior government official said that they appealed the telecom company to halt the service and they send a compliance report to them while notifying that they have stopped the service. Reliance has received order to stop the services about 2 weeks ago but the subscribers were still able to avail the service.
There is no official confirmation from Facebook yet that Reliance or TRAI contacted it about the issue. According to a Reliance spokesperson, the company is committed to provide Free Basics and working on the issue and the authorities would help India to start using Facebook Basics for free. The request to block services temporary comes when a consultation paper was published by the regulatory authority asking public to give opinion on variations on prices of data services.
